Sjælland String Quartet
Anne Søe Iwan (1st violin)
John Bak Dinitzen (2nd violin)
Bernd Rinne (viola)
Richard Krug (cello)

This world première recording of Paul von Klenau’s (1883-1946) recently rediscovered string quartets sheds new light on a highly interesting figure in early 20th century music.

The Danish-born composer left his native country to study and work in Germany and Austria, where he belonged to Alban Berg’s circle of friends.

Klenau’s music accordingly maintains a fascinating tension between Late Romanticism and Early Modernism; operating, as has been said of Berg, in “the twilight of tonality”.
