Composer's Notes

"no na", a Viennese dialect expression that is not easy to translate, refers to things that are unquestionably self-evident. The inspiration for this tone poem came from studying exemplary female figures who push boundaries and explore the scope of what is possible. They allow themselves to play with identities in ironic refractions, do not shy away from the scandalous, assert themselves in spite of all risks and resistance, even if they are sometimes regarded as crazy.

Musically, the path to this unrestrained self-assertion is presented in five pictures. What they have in common is a motif that runs through different characterizations, a search process around a central tone that is initially presented by individual instruments, illustrating individuality through the HOW, oscillating between lifelessly pale and highly expressive. The last image takes up what was presented at the beginning in a modified form.

The middle section is dedicated to the search movement, playing with wellknown structures, feigning familiarity only to break it again immediately. An attempt is made to arrive at a self-definition through cautious probing, a trial flare-up - always reflecting the question of one's own identity. In contrast to this thoughtful middle section, the picture before it is a sarcastic play with clichés and exaggerations, while the fourth picture illustrates a dramatic and violent rebellion. The end is a gesture that leads into the open - a giocoso, no na.
