Born 24 January 1918, son of the Austrian military attaché in Bern, William von Einem
1928-1937 (Matriculation) - Secondary schools in Plön and Ratzeburg (Holstein)
1938 - Coach at the Berlin Staatsoper and in Bayreuth
1941 - Studied composition with Boris Blacher; beginning of life-long friendship
since 1944 - Lived in Austria (mostly lived and worked in Vienna); studied counterpoint there with Johann Nepomuk David
1946 - Married Lianne von Bismarck (died 1962)
since 1946 - Advisory and directing functions in the Vienna Konzerthausgesellschaft, at the Salzburg Festival and Vienna Festival
1963-1972 - Taught at the Vienna Conservatory of Music
1965-1970 - President of the AKM (Society of Authors, Composers and Music Publishers)
1966 - Married Lotte Ingrisch
Received many honours including the Honorary Citizenship of the City of Vienna, Memberships of the Society of the Friends of Music and of the Vienna Konzerthausgesellschaft, and was President of the Alban-Berg-Foundation; posthumously named a "Righteous Among the Nations" by Yad Vashem
