raw power was inspired by the proto-punk music of Iggy (Pop) and the Stooges, epitomized by his 1973 record of the same name. The work explores the heaviness, clangor and joyous honk found in Pop's music—which, at least in the world of chamber music, can only be delivered by a sax quartet—as well as the fascinating dichotomy of Pop's persona, which is like a well-mixed cocktail of one part dork and two parts danger. He's like the coolest, sexiest geek you'll never meet, and I wanted to try to somehow capture this confused energy in my composition. Lasting approximately 6 minutes, raw power was commissioned by the Prism Quartet, and was premiered by them on June 4, 2010 at Symphony Space in New York City.
