Composer's Notes
“Phantom Waltz” (1989) is from a multi-movement work called Poe Pieces which I composed for Ellen Fisher’s dance-theater work Dreams Within a Dream, inspired by the life of Edgar Allan Poe. It originally accompanied a section based on Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death.” The bitonality of “Phantom Waltz” sets up a tension between the dancing motion and the sense of hovering doom.
