"Penderecki's Capriccio for Solo Cello is an incredible piece, consisting of pure energy, color, emotion and contemporary technique. No technique of the classical style of music can be found in this piece. (Fortunately there is a German technique guide for those who would dare take on the piece). Atonal qualities are found everywhere; melody as we know it is irradicated instead replaced by virtuostic "sound effects". Percussion, battuto col legno, approximate pitches, tailpiece playing, playing between the bridge and tailpiece...the list goes on and is crazy by normal standards, but anyone who would not take on this piece could not be normal in a sense. (Like me...). Ironically, scattered throughout the piece are C-major chords, not indicating the dominant key, but rather adding excellent contrast to everything in the piece. For aesthetic qualities, Capriccio has none; instead, it has awesome energy and drive, a rainbow of different colors and incredible contemporary techniques that'll awe any receptive audience with the performers virtuosity. Penderecki's Capriccio for Solo Cello is a must have for any avid and daring contemporary music cellist who wishes to push the boundaries of the instrument they play."
