This is the first publication of the original score by Modest Mussorgsky. The composer himself wrote the song text in the style of Lord Byron's poem of the same name. Apart form the Russian text, the edition contains a phonetic transcription. The orchestral material is available on hire. Previously, the work was only known with the instrumentation of Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov (BEL 512). Mussorgsky's score in E flat minor is characterised particularly by the unusual use of alto (1), tenor (2) and bass trombones.
