This ambitious work was inspired by the Les Cheneaux region in northern Michigan. Written in the form of a suite, each movement describes a different element of this area steeped in colorful history and beauty. “I. Early Exploration” is a bold statement with stirring brass and powerful percussion writing. “II. Onomonee” is reminiscent of the early native people to inhabit the region and features a solo Indian Flute (opt. recorder or flute) along with contemporary harmonies and rhythm patterns. “III. Huron Nocturne” is a marvelously lyric movement which features the woodwinds. “IV. New Beginnings” brings this impressive work to a close with an energetic 6/8 pulse and spirited melodies.
