2. Ein Feste Burg ist unser Gott

The Millennial Suite's six movements make imaginative use of popular hymns that are presented in chronological order. With regard to this movement, Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, is a setting of all four verses of Martin Luther's original hymn tune and text. Martin Luther(1483-1546)created both the melody and words when the Plague was spreading throughout his life from chronic illnesses (perhaps as a result of the physical deprivation he had undertaken as a monk) and as the words indicate, one easily imagines Luther finding strength and courage in God at this time. This musical setting employs the melody in its original rhythm which has a much more syncopated and energetic quality in comparison to the version that is most sung today.
