This work was written for my high school ensemble, the OHS Someko Singers, for their many performances at Christmas time. I was struck by the sense of innocence and wonder captured in the text and wanted to reflect that in the musical setting. Grahame's simple and slightly archaic language brought to mind the gentle rocking rhythm associated both with traditional carols and folk lullabies, which I have augmented with occasional cross-rhythms.
