Elgar's Symphony No. 3 was commissioned by the BBC in 1932, but the work was left incomplete at the time of the composer's death in 1934. The manuscript sketches have ever since been the subject of speculation, providing a tantalising hint of a late masterpiece. Anthony Payne's elaboration of these sketches into full-scale symphonic form now realises the potential of Elgar's conception, bringing these rich fragments to life at last. This full score includes a commentary by Anthony Payne and reproductions from Elgar's original sketches.
