Composed for vol. 3, the letter ‘D’ as part of flautist Sharon Bezaly’s comprehensive recording project, ‘From A to Z’, Brett Dean’s seven-minute solo piece makes ample use of the note corresponding to the letter D: “Demons kicks off with hammering high Ds which are to be played with a great variety of instrumental colours, articulation, harmonics and nuances, in a highly excited and ‘demonic’ manner. Then the piece changes its direction, revealing a short but dense ‘rondo form’. The beginning, which was dominated by D, returns amidst contrasting sections until its energy is used up…”.
