Mélodie et Scherzetto was composed in 1904 as examination piece for the Paris Conservatoire. Subtle melodies, fierce imagination and drama nurtured by the composition of stage works make the work a varied work full of emotions which, even today, is perfect for music lessons and concerts. This edition may contribute to making a good piece by a mostly forgotten composer known again. Arthur Coquard (1846–1910) studied law and music at the same time and was a composition pupil of César Franck.
