Das dreistrophige Kirchenlied "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" stammt von Philipp Nicolai und begegnet erstmal in dessen "Freudenspiegel des ewigen Lebens". Der Dichter der übrigen Textteile der Kantate ist unbekannt. Die Strophen des Nicolai-Liedes bestimmen den Formplan des Werkes: Strophe 1 eröffnet die Satzfolge mit einem breit angelegten Choralchorsatz, Strophe 2 steht als Choraltrio im Mittelpunkt, Strophe 3 beschließt mit Akkordsatz die gesamte Komposition. Dazwischen sind jeweils zwei Doppelglieder Rezitativ/Duett gestellt.
