This piece was likely to have been an audition set piece for final examination at the Madrid Conservatoire. The Andante is designed to show off the performer's ability to play a slow melody and the Allegretto demands flamboyance.
The whole piece has a light Spanish feel, in the manner of Bizet's Carmen, which dates from the same period.
