This work was commissioned by Ensemble Modern. It was composed in 2003 and first performed on 26 March 2004 at Alte Oper, Frankfurt, Germany by Ensemble Modern, conducted by Oliver Knussen.
The UK edition of The Guardian wrote " Crying Out Loud is a 15-minute musical tantrum based on hiccupping rhythmic figures that seemingly pay homage to Louis Andriessen, before developing into a more familiar argument in which Bartók and Miles Davis tussle for supremacy."
This work may also be performed with a larger string section. Suitable for advanced standard performers
