Gradations is music of variety, of change, of progression, of growing up, even. The very titles will intrigue and delight: Kaleidoscopes by Lees, The hammock by Godard, La Styrienne by Burgmüller, Lullaby for a baby panda by Irving Fine. Bartók and Bach knew all about children's keyboard development and are each represented by absolute gems. Mozart's first keyboard minuets are here too, as is one from a Marcello sonata. César Franck's Doll's Lament and Kabalevsky's My stubborn little brother portray more negative childhood emotions, but in the main this is music of happiness and fun.
