Steve Reich's Different Trains: 30 years on

This new web documentary on Steve Reich's Different Trains has been produced by Nonesuch Records to tie in with the 30th anniversary of this ground-breaking work and the re-release of the classic Kronos Quartet recording on vinyl for the first time in over 25 years.

Stretching the boundaries of the string quartet repertoire, Different Trains combined digital sampling, music derived from speech, the combined effect of train whistles, chugging strings, spoken word and the serious subject matter of train journeys experienced in the USA and Europe between 1939 and 1945, to create a new documentary musical form.
