The large building of the Vienna State Opera is full of mysteries. One of them, perhaps the most intriguing, is the enchanted door: a magical portal which is supposedly hidden somewhere in the house and that opens for one day every hundred years. If Belmonte, Konstanze, and their friends succeed in finding the door while it is open, they are free. If not, they have to spend another hundred years in captivity. But with the help of the (young) audience, the search could be successful. The wander opera, devised by theater producer Nina Blum for the Vienna State Opera, wants to whet the appetite of the children, between the ages of six and twelve, for opera by means of a musical adventure journey through the building. The paths to be traveled between the individual stations are likewise a part of the staging; everyone is spectator and actor alike, and will experience his/her own journey. The basis of this nearly one-and-a-half-hour project is Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio. The necessary additional musical numbers are by Austrian composer Gerald Resch.

“... But above all, the small, astonished, and laughing visitors got to know the opera as it really is: a magic realm waiting to be discovered.” (Österreichisches Volksblatt, 3 October 2021)
“... A pleasantly uninhibited ensemble realizes an entertaining ‘wander opera’ in a new stage setting by Marcus Ganser, which, among other things, shines as a magical garden in which also the stage orchestra of the State Opera under Markus Henn is integrated. Charming, mobile get-to-know project.” (Ljubiša Tošic, Der Standard, 4 October 2021)
“... Sitting still and silent was yesterday; strolling around, solving riddles, dancing, and singing together is today ... The participatory project is staged breezily and full of fantasy ... An absolute up-to-date as well as entertaining gateway to the genre on a high artistic level.” (Wiener Zeitung, 5 October 2021)
