A new, scholarly, practical, and accurate edition of Handel's most popular opera is much needed, especially since this opera has not yet appeared in the new complete works and the fine, scholarly edition by Winton Dean and Sarah Fuller is out-of-print. As with Ariodante in this series, this edition also has the advantage of having been used already for a recording and many concert performances, and is supplied with consistent slurs and other articulations, when they can be determined from the sources, plus indications of recommended appoggiature in both recitatives and arias, and additional bass figures when necessary for both recitatives and set pieces.
