The widow Margarete Unermüdlich lives with her three adolescent sons on the edge of a large forest. After two of them go out into the world as knights and disappear without a trace, Margarete despairingly sets out in search of them, but leaves her youngest son, Hans, at home. In the forest, she comes across the infamous hut on chicken legs. She enters the service of the witch Baba-Yaga, who lives there and has bewitched her sons. Murmuring, two beautiful maple trees reveal themselves to the mother as the bewitched brothers. In order to regain them, Margarete has to perform a series of difficult tasks for the witch. In doing so, she is energetically supported by a bear, a cat, and a dog. When the youngest son also turns up, there is nothing else standing in the way of victory. The witch becomes entangled in the task of making a lock that cannot be opened for her chicken-leg house. Thus, she herself is locked in and must reveal the secret for breaking the spell. With the help of the water of life, the brothers are retransformed, while the outwitted witch remains trapped in her hut.
