In an Artois village, near the frontier
In an inn on the French-Belgian border, Fanchette waits desperately for Jean, her love, before their wedding. Her cousin Hercule, a customs officer, appears and demands nothing but to take the bridegroom's place. When Jean finally shows up, Fanchette hides Hercule in the cellar. To her surprise, Jean turns out to be a smuggler. With some good bottles of wine in the cellar, the couple distracts the cousin's attention while the smugglers do their little business. In the morning, Hercules leaves his hiding place and reveals to the newlyweds that he was by no means deceived: He guessed Jean's secret, but remained silent because of his affection for Fanchette.
