“I feel a certain discomfort towards the performers prior to each premiere of my piece. My music is completely devoid of technical and rhythmical difficulties, virtuoso passages, fast and impressive-sounding episodes, and the more masterful the performers are, the more uncomfortable I feel. In ‘Broken Chant’ the ‘victims’ of my style are two brilliant, worldwide famous soloists: Lisa Batiashvili (violin) and Francois Leleux (oboe).
At the same time, I would like to make sure that completely different types of challenges, often missed at first sight, would not go unnoticed by performers of their calibre. I mean maintaining the exaggeratingly slow tempo from the beginning to the end, as well as the constant gradation from one piano to four pianos. As a result, the simplicity, which characterizes my music, turns into ‘complex simplicity’.”
