Prolifération was composed during Vivier’s student years at the Conservatoire de Musique in Montréal, and was his first commissioned work by the Ondes Martenot player Jean Laurendeau. A radical piece at the time, filled with the contemporary techniques he encountered at the Conservatoire, the work uses aleatoric, or chance, procedures combined with theatrical elements for the performer.
