‘The ‘Caprices concertantes’ for violin and string orchestra were composed in the spring of 2020, at a time when newly created music could literally only be heard in the inner ear at the desk and one created one's own musical experience through writing.
The solo violin dominates the action in each of the three caprices: initially in the first movement with virtuoso tone garlands, which are then echoed in the orchestra. In the second movement, a vocal movement, the high registers of the lower violin strings in particular take centre stage, before a whimsical, allusive (but quotation-free) third movement follows, which is also available in a duo version for violin and piano entitled ‘Elephants in the Room’.
Composed without occasion during the corona period, some moments now seem, in retrospect, like a small preliminary study for the large-scale violin concerto written in 2022.’ (JXS, 2025)
