Composer's Notes
‘For the long chords at the beginning of his ‘Alpine Symphony’, Richard Strauss prescribed the use of ‘Samuel's aerophone’ - a bizarre-looking device consisting of a bellows and a tube that is fed into the player's mouth.
I took up the idea of a very long-sounding wind chord for my composition. The 11-minute composition develops from a standing sound that is repeatedly fanned out and dynamically varied, presenting the many different timbres of this woodwind instrumentation.’ (Johannes X. Schachtner)
