Programme Note
In this work Symphony No. 2 ‘Requiem for a poet” Lera Auerbach sets Marina Tsvetaeva's monologue poem ‘New Year's Song’ to music, a poem that was triggered by the death of the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, a friend of Tsvetaeva. Like Shostakovich, Schnittke or Gubaidulina, Auerbach has a close relationship with Tsvetaeva's poetry.
