Programme Note

Completed by the Russian-American composer in 2012, ‘Post silentium’ is a work commissioned by the Staatskapelle Dresden as part of Lera Auerbach's Dresden residency as Capell-Compositrice 2011/12, in which the composer makes motivic and gestural reference to the opening movement of her Requiem, which was premiered on 11 February 2012 in Dresden's Frauenkirche and was written to mark the 67th anniversary of the destruction of Dresden. While two boy sopranos, countertenor, bass and a large choir perform the Latin Requiem there, extended by the words ‘Amen’ and ‘Alleluia’, Auerbach transfers the gesture of mourning and the promise of eternal life to a purely instrumental orchestration in her ‘Post silentium’.
