Latin GRAMMY Awards & GRAMMY Nominations
In November, the Latin GRAMMY Awards named Paquito D’Rivera winner in two categories: Best Classical Contemporary Composition and Best Latin Jazz / Jazz Album. The Recording Academy also revealed nominations for the 2024 GRAMMYs, with composers David T. Little and Edgar Meyer among the nominees.
On November 16, composer Paquito D’Rivera won in two categories at the 24th Latin GRAMMY Awards in Seville, Spain: Best Classical Contemporary Composition for his trumpet concerto Concerto Venezolano; and Best Latin Jazz / Jazz Album for I Missed You Too recorded by Chucho Valdés and Paquito D'Rivera with Reunion Sextet.
D’Rivera’s Concerto Venezolano was written for trumpeter Pacho Flores, commissioned as part of a worldwide project to expand the trumpet repertoire. Flores recorded the piece with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería and Carlos Miguel Prieto on the Deutsche Grammophon label. He has also performed the concerto worldwide with orchestras including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, San Diego Symphony, and Orquesta de Valencia.
The album I Missed You Too celebrates D’Rivera and Chucho Valdés’s 60-year relationship, featuring old hits that had become Latin Jazz standards along with new compositions. Joining the duo was the Reunion Sextet, featuring musicians Diego Urcola (trumpet, valve trombone), Dafnis Prieto (drums), Jose A. Gola (electric and double bass), and Roberto Junior Vizcaino (percussion).
On November 10, The Recording Academy officially revealed the nominations for the 2024 GRAMMYs, which will take place Sunday, February 4, at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The following nominated projects feature music by Boosey & Hawkes composers:
