Detlev Glanert: Two Premieres in August
This summer sees significant premieres of two Detlev Glanert works in the United States: the North American premiere of Idyllium for orchestra and the world premiere of his new String Quartet No. 3.
This August, Detlev Glanert’s Idyllium for orchestra receives its US premiere at the Grand Teton Music Festival, and String Quartet No. 3 receives its world premiere with the Flux Quartet at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival.
Detlev Glanert's Idyllium receives its US premiere on August 19-20 at Grand Teton Music Festival with conductor Sir Donald Runnicles, who also conducted the world premiere of Glanert’s acclaimed opera Oceane with Deutsche Oper Berlin in 2019. The orchestral work had its world premiere in August 2019 with Amsterdam’s Concertgebouworkest Young and conductor Pablo Heras-Casado.
Idyllium is the third in a series of Brahms-inspired orchestral works by Glanert, following Brahms-Fantasie and Weites Land (Open Land). While heavily influenced by Brahms, Glanert avoids direct quotations in these works, instead focusing on Brahmsian gestures, figures, motifs, and structural qualities.
Brahms-Fantasie and Weites Land were written as companion pieces to Brahms’s First and Fourth symphonies, respectively, while Idyllium draws upon the 19th-century composer’s cheerful Second Symphony. Glanert captures the symphony’s “idyllic” mood and uses it as the baseline for his original compositional material.
The August 19 & 20 program at Grand Teton Music Festival opens with Idyllium and closes with Brahms’s Symphony No. 1. The August 20 performance is available to stream for free at gtmf.org.
On August 5, Glanert’s String Quartet No. 3 makes its world premiere with the FLUX Quartet at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. The string quartet has always been the most personal genre to Detlev Glanert. He states, “No orchestra brilliance is possible, no splendid instrumentation helps, it is just music in its most detailed, intelligent, and dialectic form. It is pure truth.”
This third string quartet was written during the third lockdown in Germany and the beginning of the Ukrainian war. The three movements of the piece are played without intermission and are closely linked by repeating music material.
