At the beginning of 2023, Aziza Sadikova signed an exclusive contract with Boosey & Hawkes. Under the umbrella of Concord Music Publishing, this will expand the focus of the joint Boosey & Hawkes | Sikorski programme featuring music from former Soviet regions. The agreement includes worldwide rights to Sadikova’s future and nearly all her earlier works.

Aziza Sadikova’s music skips across epochs as if in flight, displaying a wholly distinctive individual style in its complexity and joy of discovery. Born in Uzbekistan in 1978, the composer has made contributions to a wide variety of genres and evokes a wealth of images with her music.

This extraordinary composer’s catalogue is as extensive as her interests are wide-ranging. She often draws her inspiration from the visual arts, literature and philosophy. At the age of five, Aziza Sadikova received her first piano and composition lessons in her hometown of Tashkent at the special music school for the highly gifted. She later studied composition in Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky’s class at the Tashkent State Conservatory and continued her studies in England at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and Trinity College London.

Sadikova’s music explores diverse areas of new music, from experimentation with unconventional instrumental techniques to the use of complex structural and rhythmic components - for example in A Letter, 1921, Prague for piano four hands, video and typewriter (2012), Silberklang for soprano and chamber ensemble (2016) or the chamber opera All About Sally (2015). However, her work is also influenced by the emotional power of Romantic music (Untitled for choir and orchestra and Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, both 2016) and borrows from textures in the neo-baroque style (Variation for piano quartet, 2011, or cadenzas to cello concertos by C. P. E. Bach).

Aziza Sadikova has worked with musicians from the UK, USA, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, France, Poland, Italy and Japan. Her music has been performed at the BBC Proms, Bachfest Leipzig, Wien Modern, Philharmonic Academy Concerts in Hamburg, Young Euro Classic, KasselMusic Days, Aspekte Salzburg, Klangwerkstatt Berlin and ReMusic Festival St Petersburg, among others; her works have been conducted by Kent Nagano, Omer Meir Wellber and Jonathan Stockhammer.

Extraordinary projects have been created in collaboration with authors such as Arno Geiger, Jens Schroth and star screenwriter Luke Davies. She composed for Simone Rubino (percussion), Julian Steckel and Konstantin Manaev (cello), Yury Revich and Thomas Gould (violin) and Natalia Pschenitschnikowa (vocals). Commissioned works have been written for the BBC Proms (Marionettes, 2020), the Ensemble Quillo (All about Sally, for the Schaubühne Berlin), the Bachfest Leipzig (Mirroring Contrapunctus for orchestra), as well as for a song recital “Beethoven-Sadikova” at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and an experimental opera project for the Ring des Nibelungen in Chinese-German collaboration, together with the Berlin director Anna Peschke.

Aziza Sadikova’s work has won several awards, including the Brandenburg Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs’ Arts Advancement Award and the European Composition Prize. BBC World Service featured her in their TV documentary “100 Women”. In the 2022/23 season Aziza Sadikova is composer in residence at the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini in Parma. For autumn 2023, world premieres of new concertante orchestral works have been planned with Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig.

Gabriel Teschner, Composer & Repertoire Manager at Boosey & Hawkes | Sikorski, Berlin, says about the new contract: “When I heard Aziza Sadikova's music for the first time a few years ago, I was touched and fascinated by her world of sound and followed her further development with great interest. Today we are very happy to be able to accompany and support the musical path of this versatile and unique composer, who has her roots in Uzbekistan.”

Aziza Sadikova herself declares: “I am delighted that with Boosey & Hawkes I will be represented by one of the best-known music publishers anywhere. As an artist living in Berlin I am very happy to be able to work directly with the team at the Berlin office and at the same time to be supported by the publisher's international network.”
