Boosey & Hawkes is pleased to announce that Thomas Bangalter, co-founder of Daft Punk, has signed a new agreement to publish the music from his ballet score Mythologies. The full evening ballet, choreographed by Angelin Preljocaj, has been touring France and Italy and its first recording is released by Erato in April. Individual tableaux from the 90-minute orchestral score are now available for concert performance.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 6 February 2023

Boosey & Hawkes, a Concord company, is delighted to welcome Thomas Bangalter’s ballet score Mythologies to its catalogue. Most recognised as a founding member of the Grammy Award-winning duo Daft Punk, Thomas Bangalter collaborated with Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo between 1993 and 2021, exploring technology and the interface between man and machine. The new agreement extends Thomas Bangalter’s relationship with Concord Music Publishing.

Thomas Bangalter composed Mythologies, his first orchestral work, as a collaboration with celebrated choreographer Angelin Preljocaj. The full-evening 90-minute ballet was performed with ten dancers from the Opera National de Bordeaux and ten from the Compagnie Angelin Preljocaj, accompanied by the orchestra of the Opéra National de Bordeaux conducted by Romain Dumas. Following its premiere at the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux in July 2022, the production undertook a 37-date tour to Biarritz, Lyon, Antibes, Aix-en-Provence, Rouen, and travelled to the Festival Aperto in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Autumn 2022 saw a sequence of sold-out performances at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris with the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris. The ballet is scheduled for a further run at the Théâtre National de Marseilles between 8 and 11 June this year.

Erato has announced the release of the first recording of Mythologies, due for global release on 7 April, and has released a digital taster track, L'accouchement, drawn from the ballet. The recording features the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine conducted by Romain Dumas (Warner Classics 5419745384).

Over his creative career to date Thomas Bangalter has composed for various ensembles for Daft Punk projects, the soundtrack to the film Tron: Legacy (2010), and the album Random Access Memories (2013), often entrusting the arrangements and orchestration to others in the past. Mythologies (2022) is his first solo project focused on the complete compositional spectrum, employing classical forces without recourse to electronics. Mythologies, whose title references the 1957 book of essays by Roland Barthes, is a response to choreographer Angelin Preljocaj’s aim to explore contemporary rituals and founding myths that shape the collective imagination. Individual tableaux include L’accouchement, Le Minotaure and Pas de deux.

"I consider music composition to be an experimental and empirical attempt to solve a mysterious equation. Yet the result remains transcendent, far beyond the limits of experience."
