The Secretaría de Cultura Federal (Federal Cultural Secretary of Culture) and Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Institute of Fine Arts) announced composer Gabriela Ortiz as the 2022 recipient of the Bellas Artes Gold Medal.

The Secretaría de Cultura Federal (Federal Cultural Secretary of Culture) and Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Institute of Fine Arts) have announced that composer Gabriela Ortiz is among the 2022 recipients of the Bellas Artes Gold Medal for artistic and literary creation. Ortiz receives this top prize in recognition of her artistic career and contribution to the development, dissemination of art, culture and the formation of new generations.

The official announcement describes Ortiz as follows:
“Considered one of the most outstanding and recognized composers, in 2016 Ortiz received the National Prize for Arts and Literature. Since 2014 she is a full member of the Mexican Academy of Arts, as well as emeritus creator of the National System of Creators of Art. In August of this year she became the first woman to join the area of arts and literature at El Colegio Nacional.”

The Bellas Artes Medal, instituted in 1993, is the highest award granted by the Institute in the artistic fields of Theater, Dance, Music and Opera, Literature, Visual Arts, Architecture and Heritage, and will be presented at the Manuel M. Ponce Hall at the historic Palacio de Bellas Artes in downtown Mexico City on December 13, 14 and 15, 2022.

The 2022 Gold Medal will also be awarded to playwright Miguel Sabido, painter Irma Palacios, and posthumous recognition to actor Héctor Bonilla.
