Composer's Notes

‘This extended choral version of Robert Schumann's song cycle ‘Dichterliebe’ based on poems by Heinrich Heine was created in 2023 at the suggestion of choral conductor Benedikt Haag. Following the musical text as strictly as possible, the arrangement of the songs was rethought for this instrumentation. They now range from three-part a capella songs by the female choir to choral songs and responsive dialogues between solo singer and choir. The sonority of the choir is contrasted with a piano played by more than just two hands. Again and again, quotations and musical levels woven into the texture of the piano setting are emphasised by the choir and reinforced by corresponding foreign texts.’ (Johannes X. Schachtner)
