Programme Note

On the occasion of the Augsburg Mozart Festival 2006, Moritz Eggert was commissioned to write a piece for quintet, to write a piece for quintet. Composing a new piece without ignoring the Eggert's declared aim was to compose a new piece without ignoring the 222 years of musical history that have passed since the composition of Mozart's Piano Quintet K. 452. With the title ‘Amadé, Amadé’, Eggert refers to Mozart's preference for always using a motif twice in succession. At the same time, however, he also refers to the popular title ‘Rock me Amadeus’ by Falco. ‘This ‘Amadeus, Amadeus’ was constantly running through my head during the composition,’ Eggert confesses, which is why he made the characteristic “Amadeus” motif an essential part of his piece. His playful creative drive always tempts him to pick up on the supposedly ‘banal’ and incorporate it into more complex contexts. In his piece, Eggert dispenses with the classic piano quintet instrumentation with piano and string quartet and uses piano and string quartet and instead uses a wind quintet without flute but with piano. Surprisingly, Eggert states that this creates a ‘super instrumentation’ in which the bassoon, horn, oboe, clarinet and piano form balanced partners.
