Composer's Notes

My Scherzino was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 for the Mendelssohn bicentenary in 2009. Having long loved Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream music, I decided to use the famous Scherzo from that work as a springboard for my piece and also threw in one or two other Mendelssohnian references for good measure (I will let the listener spot these for themselves!). In 2013, I decided to incorporate this short piece, which had limited prospects for future performance on its own, into my Suite for piano.

Press Quotes

"...highly chromatic, virtuoso music that created it's own unique sound-world and took the audience on a short, idiosyncratic and tempestuous journey."

(Journal of the British Music Society)
