The work Symphony No. 4 ‘Arctica’ for orchestra, choir and piano by Lera Auerbach, which premiered in Washington on 30 March 2019, was commissioned by the National Geographic Society. It explores the beauty and mystical soundscape of the Arctic, but also the endangerment of this region as a result of global warming - the Russian-American composer, pianist, writer and visual artist Lera Auerbach was inspired to write her piece when the National Geographic Society invited her to visit the Arctic as a kind of cultural ambassador to experience the magical, majestic and fragile beauty of this region.
"Auerbach has likened the piano to an Inuit spirit guide, presiding over a vision that leads backwards from the arrival of Europeans in the Arctic to the beginning of time..."
