Composer's Notes
‘My mass fragments are a link to the centuries-old history of setting the Latin mass rite to music. Much more than a completely new, independent approach to setting music, it is an exploration of the traditions of Mass settings - familiar gestures, moods and topoi are taken up. However, I also use my own, older material, which was once intended to become a ‘Missa brevis’.
By extending the chromaticism to 24-step microtonality, which is achieved by a second organ intoned a quarter tone off-centre, the recurring tonality and its occidental order is supplemented on the one hand, but also repeatedly irritated on the other.’ (Johannes X. Schachtner)
