Programme Note

The drama is based on a text from the estate of Federico García Lorca. ‘My work tends from the introverted to the extroverted,’ Müller-Wieland comments on his opera project, ’and not the other way round. That's why I'm interested in everything wild, and that's why everything esoteric annoys me. I always want to purge my sketches of static, manic and narcissistic melancholy. And so I came across a treatise by García Lorca: ‘The Cante-Jondo. Andalusian primal song'. Ever since this reading - which jumped out at me - Lorca was firmly anchored in my firmly anchored in the back of my brain.’
