Fine's Music for Piano (1947) was a tribute to his mentor, the famed French composition teacher Nadia Boulanger. In transcribing the piece for orchestra, composer and conductor Joel Spiegelman also paid tribute: to his mentor and colleague, Irving Fine. "My principal aspiration was to re-imagine in orchestral terms the colors that a pianist might bring to the work," he writes, " . . . bringing to orchestral life the driving rhythms and the moments of elegant lyricism and expressivity that pervade this quintessentially American work."
