Composer's Notes
‘This piece was commissioned by Andres Mustonen and Pavel Vernikov. The premiere took place in Italy. "Ex contrario" means “out of opposite” in Latin. In this composition, I made an attempt to express the peaceful coexistence of Oriental and European musical traditions. As I believe that not even the next generation will witness different religions coexisting peacefully, I tried to realize this unattainable hope in music. It is only the listener who may judge whether or not my goal has been achieved.’ (Giya Kancheli)
