‘In my work during the past few years, the performance direction diminuendo al niente has been used so frequently that I decided to entitle my new work, scheduled to receive its premieres in the three Scandinavian cities Copenhagen, Oslo and Gothenburg, “ ... al niente”. This notion corresponds in its meaning to my current frame of mind, since diminuendo al niente does signify a gradual dying away ... And although my consciousness is clearer today than ever before, the time I have experienced (!) and the time I have left (?) occupy my thoughts more and more frequently. And although I am still full of strength and ideas and no less ready to overcome virtually infinite obstacles, the warning diminuendo al niente constantly shines over me recently like a “pulsing line”.
I was never a pessimist and understand very well that the process of gradual departure from this life can last a long time, sometimes interminably long. In our consciousness, thoughts about such universal problems as being and death begin with increasing age and maturity. The fact that we deal with these questions differently at different stages of life, or that our ways of dealing with them should change at all, is of course another question entirely ...
Whilst working on ‘ ... al niente’ I turned 65 years of age!’
