Repertoire Note
Originally written for baritone and piano, these songs are widely acknowledged to represent some of the most naturally sympathetic settings of Shakespeare in the repertoire. Their poetic sensitivity is further heightened in Finzi’s version with string orchestra. Come away, come away, death carries great emotional plangency and Fear no more the heat o’ the sun was regarded by Vaughan Williams as one of the loveliest songs ever written. It was a lover and his lass is ideal for ending a concert with a spirited flourish.
