Composer's Notes

My orchestra piece for the BBC Radio 25 for 2025 Commission is dedicated to the legalisation of the gay marriage in UK in 2013. My aim was to create a piece of pure celebration and joy, with an occasional dark chord to have a glimpse of a memory of the struggle that went to getting to this point. The piece consists of 4 main themes. It starts with the trumpet playing a fanfare made up of 4 recurring pitches (D, C, E and G). It transits via a virtuosic arpeggiated flourish in the piano into a light and playfully textured section which is followed by an uplifting melody in G major until it swells into a grand horn solo which entails a short quote of Mendelssohn’s famous wedding march, as a subtle musical wave to the past. The piece ends with the fanfare material from the beginning of the work.
