Composer's Notes
‘I began work on the piece in Moscow and finished it in Ruza (a composer's retreat near Moscow) in the spring of 1982. It is a one-movement composition of about ten minutes in a typical (intentionally typical) sonata form. The sonata is one of my particularly delicately toned works, in a cheerful mood, combined with an innate sense of spring awakening. The ‘Spring Sonata’ was commissioned by the Russian flautist Irina Lozben and is dedicated to her. She played the premiere of the piece on 29 February 1984 at the Union of Composers in Moscow together with Vassili Lobanov (piano).’ (E. Firsova)
