Incidental music for a stage entertainment to a scenario by Iosef Dobrovolsky, Mikhail Volpin and Nikolai Erdman.

The second of Shostakovich’s three shows for the NKVD Song and Dance Ensemble (the entertainment corps of the secret police) dates from a time when victory seemed altogether likely. ‘Russian River’ is a vigorous piece, consisting of two lighter purely instrumental numbers (a lively March leading to a stirring orchestral gallop celebrating Shostakovich’s favourite sport) and two numbers for choir and orchestra, the sombre symphonic picture, ‘The Battle of Stalingrad’, and a simple patriotic hymn to end.
