Repertoire Note

This short ‘concert-opener’ was commissioned by the Walter Buchebner Society in 1985 and was first performed on the 28th of October that year by the Blaskapelle Mürzzuschlag. The composer remembered the main theme (first heard on the trumpet) from his Partita for orchestra of 1927, a work which, at the time, he believed to be lost but which was rediscovered, much to his astonishment, in 1994. Originally scored for wind band, Goldschmidt rescored the Intrada for full orchestra in 1986 and also included it as the opening movement of his orchestral suite, Chronica. This quirky piece, which is much more substantial than its’ brief duration might suggest, takes various strange and unpredictable twists and turns as if deliberately trying to subvert and undermine the apparent cheerfulness of the opening bars.
