Repertoire Note
This slow and reflective setting of the short poem Clouds by Rupert Brooke (who died during the First World War at the age of 28) dates from 1950, just after the completion of the opera Beatrice Cenci. In style and overall mood, it has much in common with Goldschmidt’s setting of James Elroy Flecker’s The Old Ships composed two years later and the two songs make an effective pairing in performance.
