Three Madrigals

‘The three poems are trilingual incarnations of an idea: the ‘starry kinship’ of man and woman that evaporates on earth. In keeping with the three languages, the music has a French chanson flavour in the first madrigal, Viennese ‘Alban-bergian’ traits in the second madrigal (b-a-c-h also sends its regards) and spiritual melodiousness in the third. But in the third madrigal there is also an epilogue that summarises everything ... the C major relationship of all tones.’ (Alfred Schnittke)
