- 20th-century American composer, conductor, and mezzo-soprano
- Acclaimed composer of orchestral, choral, chamber, and vocal works that blend 20th-century European techniques with the music idioms of her Black American heritage.
- Studied composition at Westminster Choir College, the Berkshire Music Center in Tanglewood, with Luigi Dallapiccola in Florence, and with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, where she received a "grand prix".
- First Black female composer to have an orchestral work performed by the New York Philharmonic in 1965
